Event Information
You love being on the water. You love supporting a good cause. This is an opportunity to bring those two loves together! Whether you are into flat-water or white-water, kayak or canoe, even if you've never paddled a boat, this event is for you. What's involved? The week-long event runs from Saturday, August 8th through Saturday, August 15th. We finish things off on Sunday, August 16th with a big ol' party (location TBD), complete with Cajun dance hall/Zydeco music by the All Night Ramblers, plus great food and lots of fun for the family.Similar to walk-a-thons and bike-a-thons, we ask you get donations from your friends, family, co-workers, etc. You raise any amount that you are comfortable with, knowing the money is going to a great cause! There are a few ways to participate.

  • You can pledge to either canoe or kayak for as many hours as you think you can over the week's time. We suggest a target of 10 hours over the course of the week. For some, this might be too much, for others, the target might be 20 or more hours. Ultimately, you will compete based on actual numbers, so go ahead and estimate high. Intimidate people.
  • If you are not interested or unable to paddle that week (maybe its the week of that big vacation) you can sponsor the Families in Recovery Team. We are an intrepid group and are willing to paddle as many hours as required to make you happy.
In both cases, you collect sponsorships from your network of friends, family, co-workers, etc. There is no sponsorship per hour or mile paddled or anything like that. We want to keep it simple. If you go with the first option, you then submit your hours, and at the end, we tally how much everyone paddled to see who racked up the most hours on the water. The winner earns honor, glory, and The Golden Paddle (more on that to come). And everyone has a great time. When you sign up, you can optionally pledge to raise as much as you think you can. Again, this is optional, and you can opt to leave this blank. Just like with the hours paddled, you decide what you think is a realistic goal. While we suggest $300 per person, you might feel you can can raise more or less. Target as much as you feel comfortable with on this - we want you to participate even if you do not think you can raise much money. Remember, family alcoholism is a tremendously important cause and this is a great opportunity for you to support the mission. At the end of it all, we tally the donations collected, and the leader wins the equally coveted and freakishly large Golden Check (think Price is Right, but tackier). So, even if you never see the inside of a boat, you can still win this one.
